Costa Rica is a small country which is a very popular travel destination with a population of almost 5 million people and it’s famous for its stunning beaches, lush jungles and it’s laid-back lifestyle, but we decided to find more interesting facts about this amazing country. Here are some interesting facts about Costa Rica.Christopher Columbus discovered Costa Rica in 1502 and gave the country its current name which actually means “rich coast”. He believed that the land had a lot of precious metals. Costa Rica is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world.Even though the country accounts for less than half of a percent of the earth's surface, you can find more than 4 percent of the world's biodiversity there. Costa Ricans refer to themselves as Ticos for males or Ticas for females. Even though it is a small country, it has 800 miles of coastline between the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Costa Rica is home to a great number of volcanoes — there are six active volcanoes and more than 60 dormant or extinct ones. The Arenal volcano is the country's most active one.Fun Facts About Costa RicaThe country is one of the most valued environmental destinations. Eco-tourism is continuing to develop and give further income to preserve the country’s biodiversity. More than 25% of Costa Rica’s land is dedicated to national parks, reserves and wildlife refuges. There are more than 100 different protected areas to visit.Almost 99% of all energy in Costa Rica is renewable, which makes it one of the most eco-friendly countries in the world. The country is on the path to becoming the first fossil-free country in the world. Costa Rica is home to wild slothsTwo of the six species of sloths live in Costa Rica. There are many places in the country where you can spot a sloth, however, it may be difficult to see them for untrained eyes. 9) Costa Rica Has No ArmyThere have been no armed forces in Costa Rica since 1948, but police forces are usually used for defense purposes. The abolition of the Costa Rican military force was drafted into the country's constitution in 1949.10) The sun rises and sets at the same time all year round.Being close to the equator, Costa Rica does not experience the variation in day length, so the sunrise and sunset are at the same time every day and they have about 12 hours of daylight hours each day.11) Every denomination of the official Costa Rican currency ( colón or colones in plural ) features some animals chosen from Costa Rica’s vast biodiversity, including the capuchin monkey, sloth, blue morpho butterfly, shark and others. 12) The popular beach Bahía Ballena, which translates as Whale Bay, is actually the shape of a whale’s tail when seen from above, hence the name. What’s interesting is that this is also a great spot for whale-watching. 13) Costa Rica is one of the happiest countries in the world. According to the Happy Planet Index (HPI) and U.N.'s World Happiness Report (WHR) for the past few years, Costa Rica has consistently ranked as one of the happiest countries in the world. 14) Pura Vida is the national sloganPura Vida means pure life if you translate it literally or Enjoy Life. Pura Vida is the national slogan, and experts think that this mentality is one of the reasons that Costa Ricans often are considered one of the happiest people in the world.

⁣Costa Rica Chillin started as a blog in April 2019 when I first visited Costa Rica. Even then, I had a deep-down feeling that I would eventually move here, and all the signals pointed me in this direction. I wanted to document this experience because I knew then that it would be an experience of a lifetime, and I didn't want to leave anything out. I wished all my friends and family could share my experience, so I tried compiling it into a book. I hope you enjoy it!
