⁣Genesis 39:6
Principle: the enemy will trying using your strengths against you.
If you are good with money the tempter will tempt you there; if you are good socially the tempter will tempt you there.
I’ve learned my ability to communicate can be my biggest obstacle. Sometimes I have a big blessed mouth and other times I have a big fat mouth
Verse 7 says,
Talk about being direct and straightforward.
No ambiguity with her
Joseph is in a position here that it is just him and Potiphar’s wife; no one will know if he gives in.
verse 8
How did Joseph respond to temptation? He refused.
He did not rationalize it, he did not debate it; he simply refused.
You may be wondering, “How did Joseph refuse such a great temptation like that?”
Joseph knew his purpose and he knew who he was
This is key
When you don’t know your identity and purpose, temptation will have its way with you
Joseph knew his life was an open book before God.
Now don’t think for a moment that this was easy and it just happened on one occasion.
The enemy will continually come at you try to get you to give in.
He tries to chip away at us.
The devil is not creative but he is persistent
Genesis 39:10-12
The devil is not creative but he is persistent
When the devil comes knocking We should ask ourselves with every decision we make is this drawing me closer to God or pushing me further away from God?
Joseph knew that if gave into the temptation he would not just be sinning against Potiphar but more importantly God.
Now in Egypt sexual immorality was no big deal.
It was apart of their culture just like it s ours today.
Turn to your neighbor and tell them it is about to get PG-13 in here.
Let me preface this by saying that no one is excluded from the temptation of lust.
Doesn’t matter if you are a guy or a girl, young or old, single or married
Lust in America is like a lion devouring whomever it can regardless of age, sex, or race.
lust and sex are the daily themes of life here in 21st Century America.
Sex and lust has gone from the bedroom to the big screen
And if we are honest with ourselves and if I were to be honest with you the truth is lust feels really good in the moment; it feels like joy unspeakable.
But lust is like a two-sided coin or maybe better a two headed monster.
One side it feels like joy unspeakable but on the other side there is sorrow unimaginable.
One moment of pleasure can lead to a lifetime of sorrow.
It reminds me of how an Eskimo catches a wolf.
Our goal in life is not see how close we can get to our lust without falling but to stay as far away as possible.
I heard a story about back when they were cutting through and pioneering the old West.
it is not about how close you can get to the world and remain saved; it is about staying away from that edge of destruction.
Remember this: One step away from the light is one step towards darkness.
The further you get from darkness the closer you are to the light.
You will recall the famous story about lust and seduction in the Old Testament.
Samson and Delilah.
Samson was love-struck by this Philistine woman named Delilah and Delilah was being used by the Enemy to seduce and manipulate Samson so they could capture him.
She used her charm and her looks to get him to tell her where his power came from
Night after night Samson, the man of God would indulge in his lust for Delilah.
Each night she would ask him where his power came from and he would lie to her.
His power came from his long hair.
One-night Samson finally gave into the temptation and out of lust he told her his secret and it was the most expensive haircut of his life.
Delilah never cared about Samson but used her looks and charm to catch him and when she caught him she cut his hair and the Philistines captured him and gouged his eyes out.
Samson fell and fell hard in his own strength.
Remember this: a moment of pleasure is not worth a lifetime of blindness; a moment of pleasure is not worth a lifetime of blindness.
But no one falls overnight.
The devil comes and he chips away at you little by little if you allow him to him.
Delilah came and repeatedly asked Samson where his power was.
Men and women of God can be caught in the trap of lust.
Dont give up your purpose for your passion.
Lust goes after what it cannot afford.
Lust drives you from your calling.
And here is the amazing thing I have learned in my own life. Lust is not so much what he or she looks like on outside, but it is more about what I am on the inside.
Lust in not driven by the outside but it is driven by the inside.
Lust is not just a guy thing and it is not just a young thing or a single thing.

⁣Joseph
There are more chapter about Joseph in Genesis then there are about Adam and Eve, Noah, and even Abraham.
Last time we saw that Joseph was a dreamer.
He was a dreamer who grew up in a very dysfunctional family.
Joseph finds himself thrown in a pit by his own brothers and then sold as a slave for just twenty pieces of silver (price of a handicap slave)
We pick up the story in Genesis 39.
The Word of the Lord this morning Favor In Unfavorable Places.
Genesis 39:1
So here is Joseph, once the favorite son of his father Jacob finding himself sold on the slave market for just a few dollars.
Now this could have really gotten to Joseph.
He could have said to himself, “Am I really worth just twenty pieces of silver? Is that my value?”
Unfortunately, a lot of people think like that.
They let their salary at their job or their position at their job determine how valuable they think they are.
Our value and purpose in life does not come from the job we have or the salary we make.
Our value and purpose comes directly from God the creator of heaven and earth.
He uses tough seasons in our lives to prepare us for our next season.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:14-16,
We are lights and we are called to shine in the darkness.
You may work at a company that is completely godless and full of darkness.
Your co-workers are extremely negative and it’s a bad environment. You are begging God, “please get me out of here.”
Could it be that God has placed you in that dark environment so that the light which is in you could shine through you in the midst of that darkness?
Joseph was in a dark place in Egypt but God placed him there so his light could shine bright.
You can bring light to the darkness by the life that you live and people will take notice.
That is what happened to Joseph in Potiphar’s house. Look at verse 2.
Genesis 39:2-3
Verse 3-6
Joseph may have been in a dark place but he his light shined.
Now this is quite impressive if you think about it.
Joseph is in a foreign country where he does not know the language and he does not know the culture but yet he still excels; he does not just barely survive but he thrives because God’s favor was with him.
Potiphar realized that whatever Joseph did it succeed.
God gave Joseph favor with his boss.
One day of God’s favor far surpasses a thousand days of hard labor.
God can accomplish more in one moment with His divine favor than you can accomplish in an entire lifetime.
Sometimes in life it feels like everything is going right.
There is money in the bank and gas in your tank.
You feel good about life.
You sense you are in a good season and you are expecting good things to continue to take place.
But there are other times in life when you feel like you are out of season;
Joseph was out of season as a slave in Egypt.
But I just want to encourage you that God can bless you even in an unlikely season.
In fact, God specializes in blessing his people out of season.
God says in Isaiah 43:19
When you think you are out of season all of a sudden you experience the unlikely favor of God.
Some of you feel like you are out of season right now.
Your circumstances tell you that the odds are against you.
Once there was a time when Moses was leading the Hebrew people through the wilderness and they began crying out to Moses because they wanted meat.
All they had in the wilderness was this bread like substance called Manna.
They wanted meat but Moses said there is no way for us to get meat out here.
We are in the desert. Moses had put God in a box.
Moses thought they were out of season in order to receive meat.
Moses was looking at things in the natural.
What he forgot is that God looks at things from the supernatural.
God says don’t put me in a box Moses. Just watch what I can do.
And in the most unlikely of ways God sends this massive wind that blows hundreds of thousands of quail into the dessert.
Now quail don’t travel in the desert but God is in control of the wind and God is in control of the quail.
God blessed the Hebrew people with meat in an unlikely way at an unlikely time even though they felt like they were out of season.
God wants to do the same thing in your life.
The conditions may not be favorable, but God can give you favor in unfavorable times.
There is no limit to God’s power.
And remember one touch of God’s favor is all you need.
God being for you is more than your family being against you.
God being for you is more than your boss being against you.
God knows how to bless you in unlikely ways.
What is favor? Better yet, who is favor
Favor is not a place; Favor is a person
Go to Luke 4
Picture not definition of favor
Jesus proclaims the year of the Lord’s favor in the synagogue of his hometown Nazareth
Notice that right before he proclaims favor he is tested by the devil in the wilderness
Luke 4:13

⁣Genesis 37
Joseph grows up in a very dysfunctional home
Jacob had 4 wives & lots of children
Joseph had many brothers from multiple mothers
Great family drama
Jacob's favorite wife = Rachel but he had 3 others
Saying in the Middle East of why you need 4 wives
These wives all competed against one another
Sibling rivalry formed
One big dysfunctional family
Dinah
Genesis 34:1-2,
Dinah gets raped and brothers seek revenge
Jacob gets angry not because of the rape, or the brutatility of his sons but what it does to his image
Genesis 34:30-31
Jacob was a passive father
Genesis theme = Passive husbands & fathers create dysfunction
Adam & Eve
Abraham, Isaac & Jacob
Genesis teaches us 3 things about family life
1. Passive husbands/fathers lead to dysfunction in a family
When issues arise they must be dealt with
Sweeping them under the rug does not make them disappear
It causes a giant powder keg
US culture wants to create passive men
1940's teachers listed top issues
Talking out of turn, chewing gum, running in the halls
Recent survey of teachers
Drug abuse, suicide, robbery 7 assault
What changed?
Kids watch 4-5 hrs of TV per day; spend 35 min on average with dad
What advice for the ministry?
2. Dysfunction in a family will always produce jealousy in the family
Nothing is as cruel as jealousy
Solomon got it right when he said, “Jealousy is as cruel as the grave” (Song of Solomon 8:6)
Jealousy never corrects itself
3. Jealousy in a family leads to destruction in the family
This is what happened in Jacob's family
Joseph Dreams
Genesis 37:5.”
At 17 God gives Joseph a dream
Even in the midst of dysfunction Joseph had a relationship with God
You might be in a dysfunctional state of life but that doesn’t mean God can’t speak to you
Bible college - How do I know if it’s God?
God Still Speaks
Prayer is a dialogue not a monologue
God has not lost His voice
John 10:27 - My sheep know my voice
In order to hear you have to listen
Walkie Talkie
3 channels God speaks through
1. The Bible
Bible is a love letter
Every time you pick it up God is speaking to you
Get in the Word
2. Visions, Dreams, Images and Mental Pictures
Joel 2: 28
This still happens today
3. Audible Voice
Most rare but does happen
Sometimes soft
Other times loud
Begin listening for the voice of God
Proverbs 8:34
How to Test if it is from God
1. God's Voice will never contradict His Word
Psalm 89:34
2. God's voice will never tempt you to sin
Steal from your neighbor? Not God
Leave your wife for another married woman? Not God
James 1:13
3. God's voice will be confirmed by God's people
I will always share with those close to me
Proverbs 11:14
Joseph heard from God and then he tells his dysfunctional family
If you have ever shared with your family something from God it can sometimes go south
Joseph shares his dream and does not get a positive response from his super ultra competitive family
Be careful who you share your dreams with
Don't cast pearls before swine
Surround yourself with a Dream Team
The hatred in their heart towards Joseph will soon into tragedy
Unchecked hatred will eventually become a devastating action
That’s why the sermon last week is so important
Matthew 5:21-22
Anger in your heart creates a living hell
You can hear the jealousy and hatred in their voices
We always think we are Joseph, but many times we are like his brothers
Jealous of another's blessing or success
This robe that Joseph was wearing stood for everything they hated about Joseph and so it was the first thing to go
They then threw their younger brother down into this pit where he could not get out.
As their brother is in this pit they are eating a meal and some traders come by.
So instead of killing Joseph they decided to sell him and make some money off him. So here we have human trafficking taking place.
Imagine being Joseph. Here you are having done nothing wrong but you know find yourself in this pit and you are all of a sudden a slave on your way to Egypt.
Now here is Joseph; the man of God, called of God and given a dream at the age of seventeen.
He goes from a promise to a pit.
He has the whole world in front of him and he is ready to conquer it, but now he is a slave headed down to a foreign land where he does not speak the language, he is not used to the food and does not know how to act socially.
Everything in Joseph’s life has suddenly changed. Imagine the thoughts that were going through his mind: will I ever see my dad again?
Will I be killed when I get wherever they are taking me? What is going to happen to me?

⁣Genesis 32:3-16
Jacob wants to reconcile and notice he takes on the humble position as servant and gives a gift
Jacob is VERY afraid though
Genesis 33:1-11
Reconciliation is quite interesting if you think about it
How did Esau go from wanting to kill Jacob to embracing Jacob?
Reconciliation is a beautiful thing
Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers for they will be called children of God."
Paul said that those who have been reconciled with God are called to be ministers of reconciliation
Reconciliation is all about restoring that which has been broken
In life offenses are going to occur
The question then becomes what are you going to do with those offenses?
It's hard to love God if you treat people like garbage because you're offended
Can I challenge us today? I want to take us somewhere that might seem uncomfortable
God is working this in my life and it's beyond uncomfortable
Matthew 5
Matthew 5:21-22
Raca sounds like a cuss word
"You fool" would be considered polite in some the times of intense fellowship that Kendra and I have had yet Jesus says this is a big issue
Anger in your heart not only puts you in danger of the fire of hell but also creates a living hell in your life
Anger is birthed through offense
Have you noticed we live in a culture of offenses
Everybody is offended and everybody is mad at somebody
People are so easily offended (meme)
Ironic that Christians are the most easily offended
Watch this: the enemy uses offense to destroy what God wants us to build
God wants us to build a marriage, build a family, build a church
Enemy will use offense to destroy a marriage, family and church
The devil has one goal = destruction
Sermon = Offense - Division - Destruction
He will use the littlest things (he doesn't come with division or destruction but he comes with offense)
Solomon said, "The little foxes spoil the vineyard"
Small offenses lead to big problems
The closer the relationship the greater the opportunity intimacy or offense
Nobody can hurt you like someone you love
The people you love and who love you will hurt and you will hurt them
What do you do about that? End your friendship? End your marriage?
Look at what Jesus says in Matthew 5:23-24
How many people today came to worship yet have refused to reconcile with another brother or sister?
We come try and worship God while holding onto being offended
Jesus is saying here, "You cannot properly connect with God unless you make it right with people"
Jacob went to make it right with Esau
Enemy wants to destroy you and your relationships
Every relationship takes effort to build
Jenga set & Married couple
Build harmony
Unmet expectations in the relationship
Family events are important to Kendra
Kendra = calm and steady (loved in dating) (does she even care? while married)
Before marriage opposites attract, after marriage opposites attack
What is marriage? God takes the 2 and makes 1 (remember the potatoes)
Jesus said what God has joined together let no one separate; God hates divorce because it's epitome of destruction
God takes the 2 and makes 1; the enemy tries to take the 1 and make 2 again
How does the enemy take the 1 and make 2? Little offenses
He didn't take the trash out (jenga piece)
She spent too much even though it was on sale (jenga piece)
He left the toilet seat up (jenga piece)
She did not acknowledge how good his sermon was after church that he put 20 hours of blood, sweat and tears (sorry for projecting)
Jesus says, "You cannot properly connect with me while you hold onto this stuff)
In our refusal to let go we get weighted down
Everything will eventually collapse
Harmony - Offense - Division - Destruction (white board)
How To Build Back?
How do we build back? Can we build back? Yes it is called reconciliation
Forgiveness takes 1 but reconciliation takes 2
To build back humility is starting point
Jacob humbled himself and took position as servant with a gift
Humility will bring about unity and unity will produce restoration which will lead back to harmony
Pride holds on to the offense

Genesis 3:15
Genesis 29:1-2
Theme = find wife at the well = Isaac, Jacob, Moses, Jesus
Jacob talks to the Shepherds and them his future wife arrives
Genesis 29:9-30
Todays message - Love is crazy (could have been what goes around comes around)
Love though is an interesting thing
Love will cause a mom to give up sleep for months to take care of a newborn
Love will cause a dad to work 2-3 jobs to provide for his children
Love will cause a wife to forgive a husband and cause a husband to lay his life down for his wife
Love is a crazy thing
Love is necessary for any relationship to function
When it comes to human beings Relationships are the essence of life
Relational beings
We need relationships
Iron sharpens iron
God values relationships
So much so He Gave the law for the purpose of relationships
Regulated their relationship with God and each other
Law was given to bring wholeness to the community
Help fallen people develop godly relationships
God recognizes the importance of relationships
We are Relational beings that are good at making things messy
Some have a Ph.D and need lots of grace
We all need help in this area
Too often we are focused on finding the right ONE
Right husband/wife, Right best friend, Right business partner
To find the right one we must become the one
Funny story about new store that sells husbands in NYC
All of us are different but want the same thing
Want our needs met
4 Basic Needs
Hunger & Thirst for our needs to be met
We think marriage & family will meet our needs
Jimmy Evans list 4 basic needs
1. Acceptance
Will adjust who we are (masks)
2. Identity
Who am I?
3. Security
Feel safe emotionally, relationally & financially
Fear triggers fight or flight
4. Purpose
What on earth am I here for?
Have to have these 4 needs met to be healthy and whole
We naturally try and get our needs met
Problems arise when we try to get people and things to meet these needs
Careers
Family
Drugs
Sex
Power
The person using his wife is no better off than the person using drugs when trying to meet these needs
Jeremiah 17:5
Setup for failure
Verses 7-8
No human can meet your needs
Only God can
When try to have others it hurts us and them
I've unfairly done it to Kendra and creates friction
Only God can meet our deepest needs
John 6:35,
No guy or girl can satisfy your thirst
Jesus offers something that no one else can: wholeness
Not about finding the right one or being married to the perfect one
Become the One
"I hope I find the right one to marry"
"Oh no! I married the wrong one!!!"
Instead of worrying about finding the one focus on being the one
Law of like attraction
Don't be consumed with the thought of marrying the wrong one
Be the right on and watch the change happen
Easy to blame our problems on those closest to us
"All she does is spend" "All he ever is is rude"
Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror
The problem in your marriage might look back at you
Be the one
Becoming the one is becoming more like Jesus
Triangle
I need to be more like Jesus to be better to Kendra
What is Love? Love is a feeling but it’s so much ore than that
1st Corinthians 13:4-7
God's love is in you so you can express it to others; love is a decision you make
Address The Mess
Maybe you are in a messy relationship
Look at God's original intent
Genesis 2:21-24
Marriage is between one man and one woman
One flesh sounds cool but is hard
A good marriage is like mashed potatoes
Potatoes example
3 ways to address the mess and make mashed potatoes
1. Celebrate Differences
Don't just tolerate but celebrate
Odds are your husband is not like you
It's a good thing
Guys and girls are different
Opposites attract
Kendra and I are VERY different
Where I am weak she is strong
We complete and compliment one another on our best days
Differences can be seen as negative or positive
Celebrate don't just tolerate
Psalms 139:14
2. Communicate Affirmation
Most relationship problems stem from poor communication
Where clear communication begins...
Need to learn to speak the universal heart language
It is not criticism or condemnation or complaining
That's the opposite
We dread criticism but long for affirmation
Affirmation is the universal heart language
Affirmation brings the best out in people
Inside every man is a king or peasant
3. Continually Forgive
Learning to forgive is a necessity
Fallen people do...
Decide in advance to forgive like God does
Matthew 18:21-22
Peter has someone in mind
People close to us hurt the worst
Christians are good at keeping score
Peter thinks he is generous
Jesus says 70 times
Forgiveness is not about keepings core but losing count
Conclusion
Matthew 6:14-15,
2 unforgivable sins
It is unforgivable to be unforgivable
Receive grace based on how you give grace
Forgive
Not worth going to hell because you can't let go

⁣Jacob has tried accomplishing everything with his own schemes, tactics and plans
We reach an impasse in his story; Jacob enters God's School of Brokeness
All of God's mighty men and women must graduate from this school
Matthew 9:57-62
Following Jesus is not a walk in the park; following Jesus means denying oneself, grabbing a cross and following Him
Going through God's school of brokenness is a must
Before God does something great through you, He must first do something great in you
“It is doubtful that God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply” - A.W. Tozer
Genesis 28:10
550 mile trip from Beersheba to Harran
More than a month's journey
Very dangerous to go alone
Genesis 28:11
It represents the state of Jacob's life
He stole the blessing but now he is sleeping on a rock as a pillow
Something happened to Jacob in the midst of his discomfort
Genesis 28:12-15
I find it interesting that it is not at his destination that God appears to him but it's on the journey
This is Jacob's first encounter with the Lord
Jacob has spent his entire life trying to make something happen with his own strength and cleverness
Jacob has been doing things his own way and now he is sleeping on a rock but God...
Have you ever found yourself in an uncomfortable season of life because of a decision you made but God showed up anyways?
In your hardest times you will get your greatest revelation
C.S. Lewis - God whispers to us in our pleasure but He shouts to us in our pain
Jacob is the 1st person in the Bible to see into heaven
That rock would have put a crick in his neck for sure
Out of his pain he sees something incredible
We learn something here about heaven and how God and his angels operate
Notice they are ascending and descending
God's Divine Council
Psalm 82:1
Psalm 89:5-7
Who is on the council?
We know angels are, cherubim are, many other creatures are including humans
Satan also has a role on God's divine council
Job 1:6-11
More here about satan than anywhere else
Satan means accuser
He accuses God's people day and night
Revelation 12:10
One day he will be hurled down but for now he accuses
The devil accuses the best of us; Jesus saves the worst of us
Jesus is a greater Savior than you are sinner
What does Satan accuse us of? Past, motivation and hearts
Today he has a lot of help from Christians
Gossip and slander about the past, motivation and heart of another believer
Quit assassinating the character of your brother and sister
Satan is not the halloween costume; he would like for you to think he is
He is the most beautiful angel God ever created
Beautiful but pride causes him to be evil
Satan has a personality; intellect and emotion
He has access to heaven
"Where have you been" - God
"Roaming around" - Satan
He doesn't roam without a purpose
1st Peter 5:8
The devil is not omnipresent like God
Not in Africa and America at the same time
But can go from Africa to America in a moment
There is a real devil, but there is also a real God
If God is for you it doesn't matter if the devil is after you
Our God is not a distant deity, but a faithful companion in the good and not so good
The angels work on behalf of the Lord to carry out the plans and promises of God
The Promise
Genesis 28:16-22
Notice that Jacob sees God when he rested
God was there but Jacob missed it until he rested
When Jacob stopped trying to make it happen then all of a sudden his world changed
Proverbs 19:21
God had a plan and a purpose for Jacob
Jacob did everything he could to mess it up
But the gifts and calling of God is irrevocable
When God makes a promise He will see it through
God even knows how to take our biggest mistakes and weave them into our story with and make our messes into a tremendous message about the goodness of God
I'll prove it to you
Romans 8:28-30
I don't have to ask God to be with me
I need God to help me see that He is with me
This promise goes back to Genesis 3:15 about the coming Seed of the Woman who will crush the head of the serpent
Through Abraham would come this seed, through Isaac and through Jacob
Jacob is on his way to harran to get a wife because he has to have a son because the Messiah has to come because God made a promise
When God makes a promise you can sleep on it
It takes faith to rest
Mark 4:35-31
Disciples are panicking, they are uncomfortable
They thought Jesus did not care
They thought one thing but Jesus knew something else which is why He was able to sleep in the storm
Jesus knew a promise had been made in the Garden of Eden in Genesis 3:15
He knew that His heel was to be bruised by the serpent but He would crush the head of the serpent
That promise is not fulfilled until Mark 16
Jesus knew he couldn't drown in Mark 4 because the promise wouldn't be fulfilled until Mark when He is resurrected
When you have a promise from God you can sleep on it
If the promise is not done that means God is not finished
My prayer for you is that the Lord would open your eyes
2nd Kings 6:15-17

Series = Genesis
Focus = Jacob
I really like Jacob; I can relate with him
Extremely Complicated
Bible is FULL of complicated figures
Abraham, Moses, David, Elijah, Peter
If you are complicated you are in good company
In OT nobody as complicated as Jacob
Jacob reflects the inner conflict we face
Jacob from the womb was engaged in conflict
Rebekah asks God what is happening in her?
1st time we see Jacob he is grabbing Esau's heel
He was born with conflict; born trying to get ahead
Came into the world with me first mentality
Developed the though = if you are not first, you're last
All of us are born with a me first mentality (original sin)
Hard to live a God first life in a me first world
Me first is exhausting and miserable
World tells us = Love Yourself, Grab, Follow Heart
Heart doesn't know what it need
Jesus says = Deny Yourself, Grab, Follow Me (Good Shepherd)
If you're not first you're last is crippling
Jesus says something so strange - First will be last
What good is it to gain the world and lose your soul
Me first might gain you the world but you will lose yourself in the process
Big problem with Me first is it's never enough
Lack of Contentment = Idolatry
Jacob was never content
Came out grabbing, tricked his way into the birthright and now he will deceive his way into the blessing which will feel like a curse when he gets it
Genesis 27:1-4
Isaac loved Esau; Esau was the oldest and Isaac was ready to give him the blessing
Rebekah loved Jacob
Genesis 27:5-17
Parents have to be careful what we put on our kids
We can try to make them to be something that they were never created to be
Rebekah is not the only one at fault
Jacob is 76 years old
Genesis 27:18-27
Jacob steals the blessing; Esau plans to kill him; Jacob runs for his life
Jacob gets blessed but it feels like a curse
He got the blessing as Esau not Jacob
jacob learned how to put esau's clothes on; he learned to fool Isaac
Jacob how to use a filter on Instagram; those pics are so heavily filtered = false advertisement
Culture is full of filters
We try to pretend to be someone we are not
Become poor carbon copies of what we think we should be
Nobody can fake it better than a church person
God cannot bless the pretend you
God cannot anoint your facade
It's possible to get what you want and hate you who are
what good is it to get the blessing and lose yourself in the process?
God is calling us to remove the filters, stop wearing esau's clothes
You can pretend so well that you fool your neighbor or me but not God or yourself
Freedom & healing takes place when we get real
I've learned when you get real that you get healed
James 5:16
You can be forgiven and not healed at the same time
Proverbs 28:13
The power of sin = secrecy
The sin you hide is the sin you keep
Reveal it, healing takes place
Back to Jacob's mess
What Is Your Name?
Steals the blessing and runs away for 21 years
Decides to go back
Genesis 32:22-30
Jacob was always wrestling; always grabbing
This time someone grabbed him (verse 24)
He is 97; no wonder his hip popped out of socket
He holds onto God when it would have been easier to let go
Jacob wasn't letting go
What is your name?
Last time that was asked of him was 21 years earlier by his father Isaac
Now Jacob owns who he is = deceived
Jacob got real; removed the mask
God changed his name
Israel = prince with God
When Jacob faced who he was; God changed who he was
When you face who you are instead of pretending to be someone you are not; God will change who you are - Real me, Fake me, Future me
Now you would think going forward in the Bible he would be referred to by God exclusively as Israel
I am the God of Abraham, Issac and JACOB
I'm the God not just of Israel, but I am the God of Jacob
Jacob got a new identity when he faced who he was
Jacob = nation of Israel (God's people)
Woman at a well = church (God's people)
Let me tie all this together for you
John 4
John 4:4-7
She says - You're a Jew & I'm a Samaritan
Jesus says - If you knew who I was you would ask me for water because i have living water
She says - give me some
Jesus says - go get your husband
Time froze for this woman
5 husbands and living with a man not her husband
Life had been rough and she could have tried to avoid this sensitive subject
If someone judges me on my past; that's' fine they have a past to
This woman could have walked away from her issue but she chose to wrestle with it
She got real with Jesus
Jesus said - you have answered well
She says - you must be a prophet
Jesus says - I am the Messiah
She is the first person Jesus reveals himself to
She got real and got a revelation
Jacob got real and got a revelation
What is your name?
Jesus has given you a new name - Righteous, Holy, Conqueror, Victor
God is the God of Israel & Jacob
We have new names because of what Christ has done for us

Sermon notes:
Genesis 25:19-34
Esau was short-sighted
He could not see the bigger picture but only the immediate need
He made the need bigger than what it actually was
"I want it now"
God Is My Source
In our desire to have something now we will often go find other sources who will give us what we think we want when we want it
When you go to anyone or anything to meet your needs, you will end up with regret
5 minutes of instant gratification can lead to 5 years of regret
The pressures of life causes us to seek provision
You can run to sex, work, toxic people or God
You have to reach the place where you realize that God is my source
The Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want
If you’ve discovered that God is your source why don’t you let give him thanks
Think about this: why did Esau not run to his father?
Don't judge Esau too quickly though
How often do we run to other people or things before we run to our Father?
We will run to so many things before we run to God who is literally our Source
God has what you need because He is what you need
Sometimes God will allow something to dry up to remind who that He is your source
Remember when God told Elijah go hide at the Kerith Ravine
While at Kerith in a drought God promises to provide
Where God guides He always provides
God provides supernaturally during the drought with the brook & ravens
Elijah gets comfortable with this provision and things change
1st Kings 17:7-9
When the brook dries up we don't run to other sources we look to God
The same God who had ravens and a broom at Keith has a widow at Zarephath
When a source that God was using dries up that doesn’t mean God has forgotten you
The Bible says, "The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want."
Because the Lord is my Shepherd that’s why I shall not want
That means not only does God provide for me but He knows what I need
We think we know what we need, but sometimes it's a want and not a need
Not everything we want is good for us
I am so glad for the times I wanted something I did not need that God protected me from my desire
God knows what I need
God is my source today, He will be my source tomorrow
Esau could not see the value of his birthright over the pressure of the immediate need that he made bigger than what it was
Philippians 4:10-13
God is your source, God is your reward
Life is process of learning that God is my source
Philippians 4:14-19
God is your source
What source are you going to?
Esau went to the wrong source
He went to Jacob who was a manipulator and deceiver
As we look at this family one word comes to mind: dysfunctional
God knew how dysfunctional this family was yet He still intentionally chose to use them
God Is Omniscient
I don't fully know who God is; God is beyond me
I may not fully know everything there is to know about God but God knows everything there is to know about me
God is so BIG
God is Omnipotent & Omniscient
Omniscient = All Knowing
God is the only one who knows my tomorrow
God knows what is beneath everything that I am on the surface
God knows the good about me
God knows what I don't want anyone to know about me
People see the Instagram me but God sees the real me and still likes me
God knows everything about you and yet He still pursues you
While we were still sinners Christ died for us
God is omniscient; all knowing
He knows everything about us even the really bad stuff
Knowing what He knows He still intentionally chooses to knows by having a relationship with us
God relentlessly pursues you
The grace, mercy, love and goodness of God is beyond comprehension
God is all knowing; He knew that you were messed up and yet He still called you
He knew you were messed up and He still anointed you
He knows you
Psalm 139:1-16
God is Big; God is Omnipotent, Omnipresent, God is Omniscient
Closing
If God is Omniscient then why pray?
We do not pray to inform God but to involve God
Isaac prayed and God got involved
Philippians 4:6-7
Involve God in everything because He is your source
Prayer is not a last resort
Prayer is like breathing air
Affects every area of life
But we treat prayer like a spare tire
Prayer is a last resort
Things are bad when people decide to pray
Prayer is important
Can be done throughout the day
Conversation with God
We have a direct line of communication with the Creator of all things
Don’t be like Esau and not involve your father in your needs
You don’t need to inform God; you need to involve God

Sermon Notes:
Genesis 25:19-24
God said there were two nations in her
She gave birth though to two boys
God identified the POTENTIAL in her
God has placed things inside of you that you don't even know
He has placed potential in you
You are here on purpose, divine assignment
100 million sperm went after your mother's egg
You are here on purpose
God has placed something in you that you are to deliver to the world
You are not here to make a living and die; you are here to make a difference
God created you with a purpose and equipped you with potential to accomplish your purpose
Purpose = Why something exists
Potential = Ability to accomplish purpose
Before you live out your purpose you have to tap into your potential
Potential
Potential is a tricky word; what actually is potential
Potential is UNTAPPED POWER
Potential is not what you have accomplished
There is more in you; God never stops pulling more out of you
The one who created you knows there is more in you
God says, "Behold, I'm ready to do a NEW thing."
God is creative
God is a God of potential; He uses the word to describe himself
OMNIPOTENT
Write down 2 words
OMNI = All
POTENT = Power, Might, Ability (Potential)
Combine the words = OMNIPOTENT
Omnipotent = All Powerful, All Might, All Ability, All Potential
God is full of potential
Everything that exists was created by God
Colossians 1:16-17
It is estimated there could be 2 trillion galaxies
God created all this
The Bible says, "Before anything was, God is."
Before anything was ever created there was God
And before God made anything, everything was already in God
God released what was already in Him through His Word
God created everything that is, yet He is STILL Omnipotent
God is still All Powerful, He is still All Mighty, He is still full of potential
God is able to do more than what He has already done
Genesis 17:1
The End Before The Start
God will never tell you do something that He has not already finished
He is Alpha & Omega
Before anything becomes something; it already is finished in Him
God is looking for people to start what He has already finished
God finishes everything before He ever starts it
Revelation 13:8
How was the Lamb slain before the foundations of the world?
Ephesians 1:4
Before something ever begins, it's already finished in Him
He is Alpha & Omega, He is the author & the finisher
Isaiah 46:8-10
He makes known the end; meaning it's already finished
He sets the end and then He goes back to the start
God is looking for people to start what He has already finished
When God asks you to start something that means He has already finished it
This is why God never panics
God puts the finished thing in the start of the thing; it is called a SEED
God does not give us apples, He gives us seed
God does not give us full grown human adults; He places seed in a man to be planted in woman that will give birth to a child
And God says about that child, "Before I formed you in your mother's womb, I already knew you."
Meaning = Before you ever started in her, you were already finished in Him
7.7 billion people alive today; all came from 1
Billions of people all contained in 1 man, who was a seed
Got put the finished in the start of the thing
Adam was full of potential
How does a mustard seed become the kingdom of God?
You should be very cautious how you treat other people
You have no idea what they are carrying within them
We do not have the ability to see potential; we see patterns
Samuel went to the house of Jesse to anoint a King
He saw a shepherd boy; God saw a King
Potential Is A Mystery
Potential is a mystery though
Just because you have potential that doesn't mean you fulfill your purpose
Saddest place in the world is a cemetery
You are supposed to die empty not full of potential
For potential to manifest into purpose there is a process
2 Kings 13:14-19
The potential for TOTAL victory was announced but TOTAL victory did not manifest
Untapped potential
He stopped short
We stop the process
Potential - Pain - Purpose
Potential is in Seed Form
You will never know the potential of a seed until it's planted
Seeds don't go in the ground to die
You have to release what God has place in you
What destroys a seed or what destroys potential?
Bad soil
A really good seed can produce nothing if it's in the wrong environment
What surrounds the seed is as important as what is in the seed
What are you surrounded by? Better yet... who are you surrounded by?
Some of you have good soil but you continually uproot yourself
Embrace the process
Don't quit on the process
Some seeds take longer to sprout than others
Embrace the process
Don't quit on what God has placed in you
Pain gives birth to purpose
Start what God has finished
