Though Congress passed a massive, 4,000-page omnibus appropriations bill for this Christmastime, some may be disappointed to learn that nobody read it before voting. Despite its bloated size and a price tag of 1.7 trillion dollars, the Republican leadership celebrated this expenditure as it spent a significantly higher sum ($858B) on warfare than welfare ( $772.5B). While some may argue for austerity or point out the spending inequity, there won't be any pulling back from this extravagant show of government power over individual wallets - an expenditure that will have ripple effects through our economy long after the New Year arrives.
Despite claims by Republicans that Democrats oppose all forms of military spending, President Joe Biden's administration is a testament to the fact that this isn't the case. Under his leadership and with a Democrat-controlled Congress, military spending has increased by 4.3 percent in the last two years. This funding is $569.6 million more than requested by the President, representing a significant investment of nearly $524 billion toward protecting Americans from extremist violence and domestic terrorists. Democrats emphasize that this increase in security funding was necessary as America navigates increasingly complex threats at home and abroad.
The public has been horrified to learn of the FBI's attempts to suppress news stories and points of view it disagrees with.
