The final sentence in Naomi Wolf’s new book, The Bodies of Others, is: What did you do?
When I read that I thought to myself: What did you (I) do! I felt satisfied inside myself as soon as I read it because I knew exactly what I have done during these past 900+ days of chaos, confusion and the total breakdown of all things known. I took care of my body, mind, and emotional self. Something I have done for the majority of my adult life.
I reframed that question in my mind and viewed it as a collective question to those that stopped the world as we knew it: What did YOU do!
What have they done? And what have YOU, those reading this, possibly conspired and allowed, whether subtly aware or unaware, to be done to you? Understand that this statement is not about blaming or belittling yourself for anything that you have chosen. It is about a deeper inquiry into your possible compliance and acceptance to the things that have transpired.
You can use the rest of this as an invitation to become more intimate with yourself.
How are you feeling about yourself? Try to contact a feeling sense rather than a thought of how your a feeling.
Can you identify a sensation in your body that can give you an indication of a feeling sense? Try not to label it as a pain, feeling good or bad or something that might be perceived as a “problem.” Make an attempt to stay with any sensation, quickening of breath, sense of calm, sweaty, change in heart beat, etc, and allow for this to be present in your awareness. This might create some challenges but give it a little time. Take a few breathes to calm you thoughts and relax your nervous system.
What are you feeling about your life and health choices? See if you can gently delve into the questions more deeply and start a non-judgmental examination around what might be rising for you.
Where are you now in relationship to your body, mind, emotions since March 2020? Answer these questions with as little criticism as possible. However, if you see and feel judgment rising then notice that and possibly journal about those self judgements that you are aware of. This is not a test. This is a way to start a self inquiry into your inner world.
Take some time with this exercise and watch any: irritability, annoyance, curiosity, jitteriness, calm, connection, disconnection, fun, etc, that you might be feeling while starting to explore your internal world.
This is your body! This is your life! NO-one is in charge of your body except you! NO ONE is coming to save you or help you. Your life is yours and yours alone.
We can desire and have others help guide us, teach us and assist us in our discovery of self and learning to live a healthy life. However, we cannot have others tell us that they know more about us than we know about ourselves.
So my final question is ~ What did you do to make your body, mind, emotional and spiritual life a more dynamic and balanced place to reside during these last 900+ days.
If you don’t have a vested interest in your own health and life then why would you think someone else would?
