Elon Musk made general statements on his plans for Tesla and the future of sustainability during Tesla's Investor Day. The corporation outlined in great detail the numbers behind his so-called Master Plan 3, including what the economy as a whole may look like in a greener future and how much it would cost in comparison to the alternative. According to Elon Musk, using fossil fuels will cost the world $14 trillion, but switching to clean energy will cost far less or perhaps even FREE!

According to Tesla's analysis, a sustainable energy-based economy is not only possible but also advantageous from an economic standpoint. According to Tesla, the change would need "less investment and less material extraction" than maintaining the current energy economy. According to research, sticking with oil, coal, and natural gas would end up costing $14 trillion globally over the next two decades, a difference in price roughly equivalent to the annual GDP of Germany. The investment required to develop a sustainable economy—based on an electrical grid and manufacturing industry powered by renewable energy and electrified transportation—would be $10 trillion.
The sustainable economy would need to invest in manufacturing facilities for electric vehicles, solar panels, wind turbines, battery recycling facilities, and infrastructure for mining and processing raw materials like lithium and nickel.
The increasing expenses of a fossil fuel-dependent economy would result from diminishing hydrocarbon supplies in the future, which would increase the cost of existing reserves and reduce their efficiency. According to Tesla's analysis, only 36% of energy generated using current sources is converted into heat or work that is useful in the modern economy. Examples of such technologies include gas furnaces and combustion car engines, which can be quite inefficient. While costly, the transition to a sustainable economy has "zero insurmountable resource challenges," according to the research, despite the fact that it will cost billions of dollars to expand the infrastructure for mining, refining, and manufacturing.
The transition to a green and sustainable economy would undoubtedly be advantageous for Tesla since it would enhance the supply of lithium, a crucial mineral used in car batteries. Elon Musk has been concerned about a lithium shortage for years, and Tesla is currently building its own lithium refinery in Texas to better regulate the flow of the pricey metal. According to Tesla's research, the $10 trillion cost of a sustainable economy would be virtually entirely made up of the necessary expenditures for mining and refining.
