In this video, I discuss how Putin can have a profound effect on US interest rates by curtailing Russian oil production.Higher oil prices lead to higher US interest rates, as oil-deficient countries sell off Treasury holdings in order to be able to afford oil at higher prices. Higher oil prices also lead to inflation in the pipeline and encourage the Fed to stay tighter for longer.Higher interest rates also tank the stock and housing markets and thus have a negative effect on tax revenues.Lower tax revenues means that the US Treasury must sell even more debt to make up the shortfall, thus also contributing to higher interest rates.What's the biggest problem with higher US interest rates? It makes it more and more difficult for the US government to be able to afford to finance itself and roll its debt.
