I used the word "surrender" as it was part of a prayer unexpectedly emailed to me at 4:02 AM on a day two weeks ago when I later found myself counseling (I am NOT a counselor) a woman (Claire) teetering between despondency and despair. This poor woman is the sole support of her four children (three of whom are autistic) and a mentally disabled husband. She had been having a great deal of difficulty securing special education resources for her children in the coming school year, and the school board was not cooperating. Claire can be a very strong-willed and forceful woman (she is a police officer) and she is accustomed to fighting these battles on her own, but she seemed at the "end of her rope". I honestly felt as if I were talking someone "off a ledge"! It was then that I was reminded of the "surrender" prayer, and I was able to make her understand that God loved her children as much as she did, and that He would not test her beyond her ability to endure (Job). She needed to surrender the situation to His will and to trust Him. Whatever was to happen, He was in control, and He would do what was best. This was a turning point for Claire, and she relaxed once she realized she was not alone. We prayed for nine days, and so far things are coming together favorably, although not exactly as she wanted. When you used the word "submit" it resonated with me, and I knew that you and I both have learned something which eludes most when it comes to matters of faith. We must work to the best of our abilities, but know that a Senior Partner is making the final decisions. I congratulate you, Alyce-Kay, on your ability to accept the sudden and tragic loss of Bill. This is a testament to the strength of your faith, and of the grace God has bestowed upon you to help you through it. Your courage and selflessness in sharing your pain and your survival through the pain has doubtless helped many who would not have been capable of recovering alone. I know your words would have brought great comfort to my mother who ceased to live, but merely existed for two and a half years after the loss of my father (not so suddenly-- he was very ill), when she was mercifully reunited with him. It may be that your tremendous sacrifice as willed by the Father was in part allowed to happen in order that you might bring solace to so many others who would not have the strength to heal on their own. I believe there is a greater purpose to all sacrifices we must endure, much as Jesus' ultimate sacrifice redeemed all humanity for all time. You are a strong, compassionate, generous, loving woman, Alyce-Kay, and you are doing God's work. He has blessed you powerfully, and this temporary separation between you and Bill will be magnificently rewarded. Trust. Surrender. Believe. Receive-- all in due time!
